Description
10 The Vennel is a small, plain two-storey terrace house situated on the north side of Vennel Street in Glenarm. The property dates to around 1900, though valuation records suggest it was built sometime after 1859, and it is possible that the building incorporates fabric from an earlier structure.
The front elevation faces roughly south and is asymmetrical in composition. At ground floor level is a recent panelled timber door, flanked by a plain sash window to the left and a similar window to the right, positioned further away from the door. The first floor contains three similar but slightly smaller windows whose heads touch the eaves, aligned directly above the ground floor openings. The front façade is finished in salt and pepper dry-dash render, which may be original.
The rear elevation presents a more complex arrangement. A relatively modern single-storey flat-roofed extension with a large modern-framed window to the north face and a modern door to the east face projects from the right-hand side, encroaching onto the rear elevation. To the left of the extension, a modern glazed door opens onto the main building's rear façade, followed by a slightly narrower timber-sheeted door. At the far left stands a very small lean-to shed with a timber-sheeted door facing north. The first floor rear has three windows matching those of the front elevation. The rear elevation is finished in unpainted cement render. The gabled roof is slated, with rough-cast rendered chimneystacks to the east and west. The flat roof of the extension carries a rendered chimneystack at its north-west corner, topped with a very tall pipe-like pot. PVC and cast iron rainwater goods are present.
The character and detailing of the property are entirely of mid to late 20th-century date.
