Description
6 The Vennel is a small, plain two-storey terrace house in Glenarm, possibly built before 1859. It is constructed with a stuccoed finish and has a slight urban vernacular character. Evidence suggests the building once incorporated the smaller property now numbered 8 to the east.
The house is set on the north side of The Vennel, with its front elevation facing roughly south. The front is asymmetrical, featuring a panelled timber door to the right of the ground floor and a relatively small plain sash window to the left of the doorway. The first floor has two similar sash windows, widely spaced. The front façade is finished in painted render.
The rear elevation contains a large gabled return with modern windows to its north and west faces and a doorway to the west; this return appears relatively recent in construction. To the right of the return, the main section of the property has a window to each floor, both fitted with modern frames. The rear elevation is finished to match the front. The roof is slated with a recent brick chimneystack to the west. The rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC.
The property may be one of the few pre-1859 structures remaining on this side of The Vennel, possibly corresponding to the 'old house with office' recorded in the 1859 valuation returns as occupied by Robert Dowey and James Brown. Both this house and its neighbour (no.8) are shown on the 1903 Ordnance Survey town plan as separate properties. The building is not of special architectural or historic interest, though it lies within a conservation area.
