Description
A freestanding cast-iron K6 Telephone kiosk, erected around 1940, stands to the east side of Kings Road in Whitehead. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, this is an earlier K6 model identified by its Tudor crown cipher, differentiating it from later models that feature the St Edwards Crown introduced in 1952. The kiosk is square in plan and consists of a cast-iron frame enclosing plain glass with margin lights and horizontal glazing bars on three sides; the east elevation is blank. The north side provides the entrance, featuring a stainless steel handle. The roof is surmounted by a frieze displaying illuminated signage reading ‘TELEPHONE’ and the central Tudor crown cipher, topped by a segmental-arched-headed domed roof.
The K6 model originated in 1936, created to celebrate the silver jubilee of King George V and serving as a replacement for earlier concrete telephone kiosks. This particular example retains much of its original fabric and remains in use, contributing positively to the Whitehead conservation area. It is a notable example displaying architectural merit in terms of style, proportion, ornamentation, and plan form, and carries local historical and social significance.
