Description
The building is a freestanding cast-iron K6 Telephone kiosk, erected around 1940, based on designs by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and located on the north side of High Street in the centre of Carrickfergus. This is an earlier K6 model, identifiable by the Tudor crown cipher, which was later replaced by the St Edwards Crown from 1952. The kiosk retains much of its original fabric and remains in use.
The kiosk is square in plan and faces west. The cast-iron frame is painted and contains plain glass with margin lights and horizontal glazing bars to all sides except the east, which is blank. The base of the east elevation bears an embossed foundry mark reading “Garden[?] Company / Stirlingshire.” The north side provides the entrance, with a stainless steel handle. The kiosk is topped by a frieze with illuminated signage reading “TELEPHONE,” a central Tudor crown cipher, and a segmental-arched-headed domed roof.
The K6 model was designed in 1936 to celebrate the silver jubilee of King George V, following a competition for a kiosk design more suitable for London than previous designs. The kiosk is situated within the Carrickfergus conservation area and contributes positively to the area's character.
