Description

Detached double-height three-bay single-storey telephone exchange building in modern style, dated 1953, located to the south side of Edward Road. T-shaped plan with modern flat-roofed extension (built c.1970) to rear. Roof is pitched and clay tiled over cavetto moulded sandstone eaves (partially replaced); cavetto moulded kneeler stones to gables; clay ridge tiles. Walls are Flemish bonded red brick over projecting plinth. Windows are square-headed ‘Crittal’ style steel-framed casements (divided horizontally) in concrete surrounds. Principal elevation faces north and comprises central projecting gabled bay containing single dipartite window surmounted by raised typeface depicting ‘Telephone Exchange’ with carved stone datestone inscribed ‘1953’; narrow square-headed louvred opening to apex; group of three windows to east; dipartite window to west. Left bay contains single window to right; right bay contains square-headed entrance opening; modern double-leaf horizontally sheeted timber doors. East gable contains central quadripartite window surmounted by pair of square-headed openings with concrete lintels containing replacement steel louvres; narrow square-headed louvred opening to apex. South elevation consists of central gable abutted by link block to extension; exposed section to right contains window; narrow square-headed louvred opening to apex; left bay is blank; right bay contains single casement window. West elevation contains central quadripartite louvred opening; narrow square-headed louvered opening to apex. Set within enclosed site bounded to all sides by high wire fencing, accessed through pair of steel gates; brick plinth walling to Edward Road boundary. Tarmac parking area to south-east of site; garden to north and south.
