Description
This small, single-storey timber garage, formerly known as Phillips Garage, was originally built around 1890-1900 as a stable on the east side of Victoria Avenue in Whitehead. The building measured roughly 10 metres by 7.8 metres, with a substantial, likely later, wedge-shaped extension to the rear. The front gable, facing west, features a large vehicle entrance with a timber sliding door. Above the door, the words “PHILLIPS GARAGE, SALES & SERVICE” are displayed in what appears to be gold leaf. Two projecting lights are positioned on the gable. The other elevations are timber clad and contain two relatively large windows to the north and two more to the rear, within the extension. The roof is covered with felt and employs a Belfast truss design, a construction method developed in the mid-19th century to create efficient, lightweight, long-span roofs. A stamp is present on the trusses, adding further interest. The Belfast truss's development originated with felt-makers McTear & Co. in 1866, with further refinement by Anderson & Co. beginning in 1886. The property subsequently served as a commercial garage, reportedly around 1915-1920. The building was surveyed as part of a Belfast Roof Truss survey and is of industrial archaeological interest. It was located within a conservation area, but the building was demolished in mid-2006.
