Description

The former Glenbay Hotel, located at 8-12 Harbour Road, Carnlough, is a building dating from approximately 1840 to 1859, which has undergone remodelling in the 20th century. It is situated within the built-up area of the village, facing the main street. The building appears as two distinct blocks on an Ordnance Survey map from 1857.

The building exhibits an asymmetrical form and a plain appearance. It comprises a tall, two-and-a-half-storey block and a lower, two-storey wing. Both are rendered with slated roofs. The taller block has a hipped roof with gabled dormers, while the wing has a gabled roof; a modern, flat-roofed attic addition connects the two blocks. The roofs are covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses. Chimneys are rendered, with modern pots on the taller block and original pots on the long wing. The walls are smooth cement rendering, with quoins visible on the left-hand extremity of the taller block. The windows of the taller block are primarily rectangular timber sliding sash windows with 6 over 6 panes and horns, set in plain reveals. The dormer windows are modern rectangular fixed lights with top-hung vents. A pair of canted bays on the ground floor contain what appear to be small-paned timber fixed and top-hung windows. Windows in the long wing are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, some with 2 over 2 panes, others with 6 over 6 panes and horns, alongside more modern fixed and top-hung lights with 6 panes. The main entrance is recessed between the canted bays and features a 20th-century-style glazed timber door with sidelights and a fanlight. The south-facing side elevation of the tall block is rendered with a dry dash finish of mixed chippings.

The building stands within a small garden area enclosed by plain iron railings on a rendered plinth wall; the lower wing is adjoined by terrace properties to the north. It was formerly used as a hotel in the 1980s, and later operated as the Antrim Coast Private Nursing Home; its current use is as a residential home. It lies within a conservation area.
