Description

The Waterfall Bar occupies a mid-19th century building located at 1-3 High Street, Carnlough, Ballymena, within the townland of Mill Tenement. Although previously considered for listing, it is now unlisted and within a conservation area. The building is a three-storey, gabled structure, four windows wide, with a slated roof and rendered walls. The main entrance faces west onto Bridge Street.

The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, and there are three chimneys constructed from polychrome red and yellow brick with stub pots. Cast iron rainwater goods are visible externally, although the rear elevation now features modern PVC rainwater goods. The rendered walls are smooth, lined, and blocked, featuring a plain plinth, quoins at the extremities, and a projecting moulded string course that steps over each first-floor window to create a continuous series of label mouldings. The windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows with a 2 over 2 layout, horns, and margin lights. Most have exposed frames set in plain reveals with projecting cills; however, the extreme right-hand ground-floor window is a larger triplet of similar windows. Rectangular timber sheeted doors are found within the doorways, and a rectangular timber shop sign with a moulded frame is mounted above them. Three ornamental lamp brackets are affixed to the wall at first-floor level, positioned between the windows.

A lower, flat-roofed single-storey wing extends to the right, mirroring the rendered walling of the main building and featuring a triplet of sashes mirroring those of the main block. The north gable, visible above an adjoining building, has been rendered with a fine dashed finish. The south gable, similar in rendering to the front elevation, includes quoins and a single sashed window to the second floor. Shop signs are crudely mounted on this gable. The original rear wall is largely obscured by later extensions, and is difficult to view, although the roof retains the original slating.

The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857 and is believed to have been constructed between 1840 and 1859. It stands within the built-up area of the village, facing onto Bridge Street, with adjoining buildings on either side. Terrace houses overlook the building from across the street. Originally used as a house, the building's current use is as a public house.
