Ice House on Dunmaul Promontory Fort, St MacNissi’s College, 25 Tower Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is an ice house built between 1840 and 1859 of rubble stone and brick, constructed on a rectangular plan with a vaulted roof and a single small rectangular entrance facing approximately north-east. The structure is excavated into the side of a mound on the north side of an Iron Age promontory fort. The top of the ice house is mostly over-grassed. The interior is brick-lined and has a steep drop into the chamber beyond the entrance.

The ice house was designed by Charles Campbell of Newtownards and built for Frances Anne Vane, Marchioness of Londonderry, to serve her residence, Garron Tower, which was also under construction at the time. Its unusual location is associated with the 'castle-style' house. It has industrial archaeological interest and is also considered a monument. The structure is situated in a rural and scenic area within the grounds of a school adjacent to playing fields, overlooking the Antrim Coast Road.
