Description
92 Main Street is a two-storey single-bay mid-terrace Georgian townhouse built in the late 18th century (1760-1779), located on the north side of Main Street in Moira, County Down. The building is accessed from and incorporates the right-hand ground floor bay of the adjoining property to the left (HB19/22/025).
Externally, the building retains some character of the period. The principal elevation faces south-east and is asymmetrically arranged, with a single ground floor window to the right and the front door to the left, followed by two first floor windows. The ground floor features a large single-glazed opening to the left that forms the right-hand side of the adjacent building's facade. The walls are finished with ruled-and-lined render painted white, with a projected smooth rendered plinth painted green. The front door is timber with four moulded panels. Windows throughout are timber sliding box sash (1/1 and 6/6 panes) with no horns and stone cills. The roof is pitched with artificial slate covering, and there is a cast-iron semi-circular gutter fixed to a projected corbel course, with a cement rendered chimney. An awning is fixed over a window below non-illuminated signage.
The rear elevation is of rubble masonry with red brick surrounds and is asymmetrically arranged. It is largely obscured by overgrown vegetation. The left gable is abutted by the adjoining building (HB19/22/025), and the right gable is abutted by the neighbouring property (HB19/22/026B).
The building forms part of a Georgian terrace that may date from the early 18th century, with the neighbouring house bearing a datestone of 1735. The Rawdon family is credited with developing the town from mud and clay dwellings to stone and brick buildings in the mid-18th century. By Harris's visit in 1744, Moira was "a well laid out and thriving village consisting of one broad street inhabited by many traders, many of whom carry on linen manufacture to good advantage." A building is shown on the site on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833. Lewis's 1837 survey noted that although linen manufacture had declined, "The town, though small, is well built, and remarkably clean; it is the property of Sir R Bateson Bart., and consists of one long spacious street." No significant changes appear on subsequent Ordnance Survey editions. The building is now in use as commercial premises and forms part of a conservation area.
The interior has undergone much alteration, resulting in the loss of most original internal features. Although it makes a contribution to the 18th century terrace, the building is not considered of special architectural or historical interest and does not meet the criteria for listing. It is recorded on the heritage register as a record only.
A rear yard serving several neighbouring properties is largely overgrown and is accessed by a modern roller shutter located to the right of the adjoining building. Adjacent single-storey masonry outbuildings of no significant interest are present to the rear.
