Description
A two-storey three-bay Georgian mid-terrace townhouse with rectangular plan form, built circa 1735, located in the northeast end of Main Street in Moira between numbers 79 and 83. The building displays urban vernacular style proportions and forms part of the historic Georgian terraces that line the principal thoroughfare.
The pitched roof is finished in natural slate with clay ridge tiles and paired red brick chimneys with clay pots shared with the adjoining property. Cast-iron rainwater goods feature semi-circular guttering and circular downpipes painted blue, with a facetted hopper head and cornice detailing at the front facade; some uPVC downpipe additions exist to the rear.
The walling is ruled and lined render painted grey, with a smooth rendered plinth painted blue on the front elevation and natural finished roughcast render to the rear. The principal elevation faces north and is asymmetrically arranged. The front entrance is offset centre with a six-panelled timber door painted blue, brass ironmongery, white painted frame, and a fixed light above with five equal small panes. The ground floor has paired windows to the left and a larger single window to the right. The first floor has a single window to the left and a tripartite window above the entrance. Windows are single-glazed 6/6 timber sliding box sash Georgian windows painted white with black-painted sash boxes, no horns, and large rectangular stone cills painted blue. A sheeted timber rear door painted white provides access to the rear. The left gable abuts number 83 Main Street, while the right gable abuts number 79 Main Street. The rear elevation faces south with varying sized openings.
The building was developed during the early expansion of Moira, credited to the Rawdon family. A date stone on a neighbouring building bears the inscription 1735, marking the completion of the village. The 1833 Ordnance Survey map shows a large formal garden to the rear, removed by 1858 when a return building was also present. From 1867 the McDowell family occupied the property, and in 1894 subdivided it into five individual premises. By 1933 it was recorded as two separate dwellings numbered 110 and 111 Town of Moira, as confirmed by an aerial photograph circa 1950 showing two front entrances. The 1975 General Revaluation List recognised it again as one dwelling with a garden, though it remained vacant until Hearth Housing Association carried out large-scale restoration in 1987. Despite this restoration resulting in loss of original fabric including windows, the building retained its plan form and some original internal features, particularly timber panelling and architraves to window reveals. A 'Wyatt' style window typical of Main Street is present.
The building has been in use as a surgery since 1987. It makes a positive contribution to the character of Moira through its context within the historic mid-terrace group comprising numbers 77–101 Main Street and its group value. The building faces directly onto the principal road with direct entrance from the footpath, with access to the rear via the coach entrance located between numbers 77 and 79 Main Street.
