Description
Moira Bakery is a two-storey, three-bay mid-terrace Georgian townhouse built during the 18th century, located on Main Street in Moira. The building has a rectangular plan with a 1½-storey rear return. It sits on the main thoroughfare through the centre of the town.
The principal elevation faces south east and is asymmetrically arranged. The roof is pitched artificial slate with cast-iron semi-circular gutters, now partially removed. Cement rendered chimneys without pots sit above smooth rendered walling. The first floor features three 6/6 timber sliding box sash windows without horns, with masonry rectangular cills; the central and right windows are partially obscured by large modern non-illuminated signage. The ground floor has been substantially altered with glazed shop fronts and roller shutter hoods. A shared entrance is incorporated into the shop front with a timber door with glazed upper panels. An elliptical-arched coach entrance with timber gates is positioned centrally. The left gable is abutted by the adjoining property.
The rear elevation is asymmetrically arranged with roughcast rendered walling. A lintel-headed coach entrance is located at ground floor right, with a rear door to the left, now boarded up. The first floor has two diminished timber casement windows, with two further horizontal timber casement windows at attic level. A 1½-storey return adjoins the left side, partially roughcast rendered; the rear portion is exposed random rubble with red-brick surrounds to round-headed arched windows and a further single-storey modern abutment. The right gable is abutted by the next adjoining property.
Internally, although the ground floor has been largely modified for commercial use, the first floor has retained significant unaltered joinery work including two good stairs with intact period detailing.
The building is part of a Georgian terrace likely dating from the early 18th century; the neighbouring house bears a datestone of 1735. The Rawdon family is credited with developing Moira from mud and clay dwellings to stone and brick buildings in the mid-18th century. By 1744, Harris described Moira as a "well laid out and thriving village consisting of one broad street inhabited by many traders, many of whom carry on linen manufacture to good advantage". A building is shown on the site on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833. By 1837, Lewis's survey noted that linen manufacture had declined in the town, though it remained "well built, and remarkably clean". No significant changes appear on subsequent Ordnance Survey editions. The building could not be identified in Griffith's Valuation or early 20th-century census records. It is now in use as commercial premises.
Externally, the building retains some Georgian style and proportions to the upper floors, though modern shop fronts detract from the character of the façade. The rear yard, shared with the adjoining property, comprises several historic outbuildings which have undergone varying degrees of alteration. The building makes a positive contribution to the Georgian streetscape and lies within a conservation area.
