Description

A two-storey mid-terrace Georgian townhouse at 95 Main Street, Moira, built circa 1735 as part of the town's early 18th-century development. The building adjoins number 101 Main Street and forms part of the historic terrace comprising numbers 77-101 Main Street, contributing group value to this significant streetscape.

The building is constructed of random rubble basalt stone with red brick 1½ flat arches over window and door openings. The pitched roof is natural slate with clay ridge tiles. Rainwater goods consist of cast iron semi-circular gutters fixed to single corbelled stone eaves, painted black. The principal (north-facing) elevation is asymmetrically arranged, with the ground floor window located to the right of the front entrance, both in the right-hand bay, while the coach entrance occupies the left bay. The first-floor windows are positioned centrally over the ground-floor window and coach entrance respectively. The front door is a six-panelled timber door painted red with glazed uppermost panels, fitted with a four-paned fixed light over and cast iron ironmongery including a lion head latch and knocker. A 1½ red brick elliptical arched coach entrance is a particular feature. Windows are 6/6 single glazed timber sliding box sash with horns, painted white, with rectangular flat stone cills painted white. Modern illuminated fascia signage and projecting signage have been added over the ground openings.

The rear (south-facing) elevation is similarly asymmetrically arranged, with a six-panelled modern timber door to the left and the coach entrance to the right. First-floor windows are positioned centrally over ground-floor openings, with small attic lights directly above. The left gable wall forms a sidewall to the carriageway, abutting number 101 Main Street at first-floor level, while the right gable end adjoins number 93 Main Street. A large unfinished yard serving multiple properties is accessed via the coach entrance.

The architectural style and proportions indicate construction in the early 18th century, part of the town's development credited to the Rawdon family. The town transformed from thatch and mud agricultural buildings to Georgian stone and brick townhouses during this period. A date stone inscribed with 1735 on a terrace opposite is widely accepted to mark completion of the village. The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833.

Annual Revisions from 1866 onwards recorded the property as a house with garden. By the 1933–57 revaluation, it was noted as an "old house in bad repair with no modern conveniences". During the early 1900s the building underwent restoration and was converted into multiple commercial premises, most likely resulting in complete remodelling of the interior. At survey, the upper floors were accessed from number 97 and the ground floor was operating as a fast food vendor. Although the building has lost most of its original internal fabric, restoration work in the early 1990s allowed it to retain its essential character. The building retains group value within the historic terrace and remains an integral part of the streetscape in this conservation area.
