99 Main Street, Moira, Craigavon, Co. Armagh, BT67 0LH

Two two-storey, single-bay vernacular dwellings built circa 1770, originally constructed as part of the rear return extending from 101 Main Street, Moira, a Georgian terrace building erected circa 1735. The buildings are located in a rear courtyard accessed via a coach entrance at number 95 Main Street, situated at the north east end of the principal thoroughfare through the town.

The structures retain their random rubble basalt stone construction, typical of the area, and their modest vernacular proportions, though they have been substantially altered. The roofing comprises pitched natural slate with clay ridge tiles and clipped verge to the right gable. uPVC rainwater goods with semi-circular guttering are fixed to a single brick corbelled eave. A single brick chimney with two pots is located centrally along the ridge.

The principal west-facing elevation retains the appearance of two individual dwellings, each with an off-centre front entrance door (modern timber with glazed panels), a single ground floor window, and a single first floor window. Windows throughout are modern single-glazed timber casements with 6/6 panes top-hung, painted white, with timber lintels and concrete cills; rear windows are 1/1 timber casements. The left gable abuts the return of 101 Main Street. The rear elevation, facing the grounds of St John's Parish Church, contains a single ground floor window to each bay. The right gable is smooth rendered.

The building has considerable group value within its conservation area setting, representing one of the few remaining original rear returns in Moira, which was once furnished with multiple returns and extensive rear gardens. The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833, though field evidence suggests an earlier date. Griffith's Valuation of 1864 and subsequent annual revisions record the return buildings as a series of individual dwellings, all leasing from the occupier of 101 Main Street. The building itself shows no apparent footprint changes over time.

However, extensive renovation around 1990 resulted in significant loss of internal fabric and character through modernisation. External alterations, including the introduction of modern window and door details, have further detracted from the building's vernacular character. The former dwelling now operates as a combined commercial unit with its adjoining property.
