Description

Martel Cottage is a single-storey, three-bay, lobby-entry house with a hipped thatched roof, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. Its continuing existence as a hipped thatched building is relatively rare, and its roadside setting is considered important. The house faces southwest and is situated about three miles from Blacklion, along the road connecting Derrylin to Enniskillen.

Architecturally, the house is finished with rough plaster. The south-west facing front elevation features a modern entrance door of sheeted construction, with a glazed panel in the upper part, flanked by plain glazed vertically sliding sash windows with curved sash stops and deep stone sills. The gable walls are blank. The rear elevation includes a modern timber door with a square glazed panel above two over two vertically sliding panels, and a similar sash window to the left (north-west). Two large buttresses provide support to the rear of the building. A corbelled chimneystack serves the kitchen hearth.

The house and an associated outbuilding appear in their present form on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1857. It was once the home of a Mr. Bowles, who was a gamekeeper employed by the Florencecourt Estate and accompanied Edward Martel on the original expedition to explore the Marble Arch Caves in 1895.

The property holds local historical interest due to its association with Mr. Bowles and the Marble Arch Caves expedition, and it is valued for its rarity as a surviving thatched dwelling.
