Description
257 Mullylusty Road is a single storey, three bay direct entry thatched house dating from the 1820s to 1830s, located near Belcoo in County Fermanagh. It is approached by a pair of spear-headed iron gates hung on square concrete pillars and a stone stile leading into a gravelled forecourt, with flagging extending in front of the entrance along the left (south) side. The house faces east, situated a short distance off the road between Belcoo and Boho.
The building features whitened harled walls on rubble stone construction. The harled finish is made from a traditional mix that includes cow manure, pig's blood and hot lime from Carson's Quarry. The thatched roof, which terminates at the gables with cement skews, displays two rows of scollops exposed at the ridge and one at the eaves. The thatch projects over a windbreak porch to protect the entrance. A flaunched chimneystack stands to the right of centre on the ridgeline, serving the kitchen hearth.
The timber sheeted entrance door is recessed within the porch and is flanked to the left by one small vertically sliding window and to the right by two small vertically sliding windows. These sashes are divided into two vertically, with splayed sash stops and traditional depth sills. The entrance is provided with door blocks. There are no openings at the rear or in the gables.
The interior retains all early features including the original layout, floor level hearth, and roof structure. This is a unique example of its type and is of international heritage interest. The house appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/35 without road access. By 1857 an outbuilding was shown to the front. The property was listed in the second valuation of 1862 with James McGrory as occupant, William Nixon as immediate lessor, at a rateable value of 5/-. The thatched covering has been maintained through successive repairs in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1998 and 2003, with re-thatching undertaken using combed wheat straw (1993) and rye straw (1998). The house remains without outbuildings or formal road access.
