Description

Sunnybank is a 19th-century building, constructed between 1840 and 1859, which formerly served as a police barracks. It is now in private residential use.

The building comprises a two-storey, three-bay main block with a gabled roof and single-storey gabled wings projecting to each side. The main entrance faces south.

The south elevation features a roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses with two chimneys, one on each gable, finished in smooth cement render. The walls are wet-dash rendered with a smooth cement-rendered plinth and a projecting painted brick eaves course. Windows are later rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents, set in smooth rendered block surrounds with projecting stone cills. The doorway contains a glazed ledged timber door recessed in a rendered block surround, with a concrete doorstep level with a cement screed driveway and forecourt. PVC gutters and downpipes are present.

The west wing has similar walling and surrounds, featuring one large window with a Tudor-style drip moulding above it containing later rectangular timber fixed lights with casement and top-hung vent. The east wing is a later replacement (circa 1960) for the original east wing, constructed in smooth cement render with an unmoulded window opening, presumably replacing an original wing to match the west wing.

The west elevation of the main block presents a plain gabled end in smooth render, now spalled to reveal the original brickwork core. The west wing's west elevation has a roof of slate with stone coping to the gables, rendered walling as described, and one window with an unmoulded opening containing a later small-paned metal window.

The rear elevation of the main block is two-storey with three bays and a central projection. The roof is slated as to the front. Walling is partly smooth rendered, lined and blocked, and partly lime-washed over a red brick core. Windows are rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents in unmoulded openings. A rectangular timber sheeted door is present. The rear elevation of the west wing is overgrown. The east elevation of the main block is a similarly rendered gable.

The east elevation of the east wing has a roof of synthetic slates, smooth cement-rendered walling, and a projecting flat roof and porch at the right-hand end. Two doorways with plain unmoulded rectangular openings contain modern glazed flush timber doors. Two windows with plain unmoulded rectangular openings have modern timber fixed lights and top-hung vents.

The building stands in its own grounds facing the main road in a rural area. A pleasant front garden with trees and shrubs surrounds the property. A concrete driveway extends to the front and east side of the house. A small rear yard with a moss-grown surface contains a single-storey gabled block of similar character and materials to the rear of the main block. Corrugated iron sheeting and a modern tubular metal gate provide access to the rear yard between the front right-hand wing and a short rendered screen wall.

The original east wing of the building was constructed as a courthouse but was replaced by the present east wing around 1960. The main block served as a police barracks until superseded by the later RUC barracks (now also converted to private residential use) standing two properties away to the east at nos. 365-367 Sligo Road.
