Description
This summer house, likely constructed between 1840 and 1859, is a garden feature situated on rising ground immediately south of Florence Court, designed to maximize views of the surrounding parkland and the Cuilcagh Mountains. Constructed using local materials such as thatch, timber, and stone, it integrates well into the demesne and enhances its environment. The design reflects the pattern books common at the time.
The structure is open to the elements and features a steeply pitched thatched roof, partially overgrown with moss and vegetation. The front rises in an elliptical shape above short, radiating logs that extend to a triple-arched feature at the centre, with spandrels filled with upright logs. Uncleaned logs form the supports, topped with rudimentary cushion capitals. The plan is semi-elliptical and cut square at the front. A raised step at the front is filled with small stones laid in a herringbone pattern and contained by upright logs. Behind this, a further series of upright logs fronts the main cobbled floor. The exterior is dressed with heather coverings secured by mild steel rods attached to cleaned branches. The roof is supported by a series of uncleaned logs with panels that have a wattle-like appearance.
Garden buildings and follies were traditionally used to enhance landscaped estates and add points of interest. The landscaping of Florence Court’s site, undertaken by William King around 1780, included this summer house. Previously thatched with peat sods and heather, the structure was recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857, but not on the 1834 map.
