Description
This is a single-storey, three-bay vernacular house, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It is of interest due to its scarcity, attractive appearance, and as a good example of a vernacular building type. The house's plan form and appearance have been well-preserved.
The south-facing elevation has a single timber casement window in each bay, with the central bay housing the entrance door. The roof is thatched and low-pitched, hipped to the east and gabled to the west. A single chimney is located at ridge level, positioned along the line of an inner wall. The exterior walls are harled and painted white, while the side elevations are blank. A modern extension was added to the side around 2004, replacing a flat-roofed extension that was present at the time of the original listing. A significant fire in 1998 resulted in the loss of historic fabric from the roof. The thatch is constructed in a traditional scallop style with a flush top.
The house is set perpendicular to the road, which lies twenty metres to the east. It is accompanied by a small gravelled yard to the front and a single corrugated metal outbuilding to the west. To the north of the house is a field boundary marked by reasonably mature trees. Field divisions in front of the house run east-west and are relatively low, approximately 1.2 metres high, affording a clear view of the flat surrounding farmland.
The building appears on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map. A rear extension was added in the 1980s, and the house suffered a serious fire in the late 1990s. The current thatched roof construction dates from late 2001, following a period when the roof was covered in corrugated metal between 1999 and 2001.
