Description

Garvary is a single-storey direct entry house with a thatched roof between raised parapet gables, dating from the early 19th century (1820-1839). It occupies a prominent roadside position in Garvary townland, Derrylin, approached from a secondary road that connects the Derrylin/Belturbet and Derrylin/Ballyconnel roads. The house faces south due to the road configuration, and is set back behind a low enclosing wall with a slightly projecting round-topped parapet, pierced by an entrance with square pillars capped with steps and a gate of traditional form. A further similar wall defines the lane boundary to the west side, where a larger pillar with pyramidal cap marks the field gate entrance to the farmyard.

All external finishes, including the house walls, are of whitened roughcast. The roof features two rows of scollops at the ridge with square-cut eaves without exposed scollops. A corbelled chimneystack rises from the east gable, with a further stack positioned above the kitchen hearth; both support single pots with spark arresters.

The entrance is protected by a square-jambed windbreak porch with a concrete slab roof and is furnished with a timber-framed and sheeted door hung on three black japanned strap hinges with a lever handle of similar material. The front elevation has two windows to the left (west) of the entrance and one to the right (east), all vertically sliding windows with plain sashes, large curved sash stops, and sills of traditional depth. The east gable incorporates a lean-to store with a corrugated iron roof, timber-sheeted door with black japanned hinges, and a fixed two-pane window with a narrow sill. The west gable is blank. The rear elevation has two similar windows with narrow sills flanking a timber-framed and sheeted door.

The house is recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834-35 but does not appear in the first valuation of circa 1835. It is included in the second valuation of 1862, when Thomas and Patrick Maguire are listed as occupants (tenants at will) with Robert Collins as lessor, each sharing the property as indicated by the fraction ½ and a rateable value of £1. By 1994, the house had fallen into dereliction, having been abandoned for approximately a decade. In 1998, a major renovation scheme was undertaken using wheat straw thatch described as "long straw style", carried out by Jimmy Feeney of Oldcastle, County Meath. The works ensured the survival of the building; while modern materials were employed in the finishes, they are traditional in form and character, and the internal layout remains unchanged. Considerable effort was made to reproduce a traditional roof structure, and the front and rear access were improved during the works. The house is listed as part of a group with the store, wall, and pillars.
