Description
A single-storey, three-bay, direct-entry hipped-roof thatched house built pre-1834, located in Dresternan near Derrylin in County Fermanagh. The building is a rare survivor of a hipped-roof thatched structure; only one other comparable example exists in the vicinity, at Geaghum Road.
The house has rendered and whitened walls with a black-painted base. It faces south-west, positioned just beyond the corner of the road between Lisnaskea and Derrylin, approximately a mile and a half from Derrylin village. The front features a forecourt with a concrete box flower planter between it and the house, and a timber fence to the left. Two plain rendered chimneys rise above the roof line: one positioned above the living room fireplace and another on the left-hand (north-west) gable above the parlour fireplace.
The entrance comprises a framed and sheeted door with a foursquare glazed panel in the upper part. This is flanked to the left by one, and to the right by two, top-hung timber-framed windows with traditional-depth sills. The right-hand gable contains a foursquare steel-framed window lighting the back bedroom. A flat-roofed lean-to extension extends to the left (north-west), containing a bedroom and bathroom. The roof is finished with timber fascias and plastic rainwater goods. The fenestration throughout the main house is modern. A lean-to kitchen extension at the rear is roofed with corrugated iron and has a modern timber window on the north-east side with plastic rainwater goods. The extensions match the wall finishes of the main house.
Historically, the building is recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/35, though not in contemporary valuation records. Its location beside what was then a drive to the nearby Dresternan Castle (a small country house built by Daniel Winslow around 1740) suggests it originally functioned as a gate lodge. This interpretation is supported by Alistair Rowan in 'North West Ulster', which also notes a now-demolished thatched house further to the south-east that served as another lodge. The revised Ordnance Survey map of 1857 shows the house with a neighbouring property to the north-west side. The 1862 valuation records the occupant as James Heavy, with Henry Winslow as the immediate lessor and a rateable value of 15 shillings. The neighbouring building is recorded as a house and forge occupied by Patrick Dunn; this property appears to have been demolished in the mid-twentieth century. Despite modern extensions and alterations including replacement windows, the building retains its special character. The house was re-thatched in the early 1990s and again in 2000.
