Description

46 Mullylun Road, Derrylin, is a single storey, three bay direct entry thatched house dating to between 1820 and 1839. The building faces south-west and is accessed from a minor road running north-easterly from the Derrylin/Belturbet road, approximately two and a half miles from Derrylin town.

The house is constructed of stone and brick with a smooth rendered grey-coloured wall finish and no base course. The thatch is contained within parapet gables built up to almost the level of the roof covering. Two rows of scallops are exposed at the ridge with one at the eaves. Two rendered and corbelled chimneystacks, each topped with a single black pot, sit on the ridgeline, positioned over the kitchen hearth and the parlour fireplace respectively.

The south-west facing elevation contains a timber-sheeted door with glazed upper panel and black painted door blocks. To the left (north-west) of the entrance are two plain sashed vertically sliding windows, with one to the right. The sash stops are splayed and the sills are of traditional depths. There are no openings in the gables. At the rear, two similar windows are positioned to the north-west of a lean-to roofed kitchen extension. The extension windows are of simple modern variety, with plastic rainwater goods and a south-east facing entrance provided with door blocks.

The original layout and fenestration form remain clearly discernible. The purlin roof structure is of considerable interest, and was strengthened with minimal intervention. Some roof timbers were identified as oak and ash. Evidence of tying rope was later discovered within the structure.

The rear of the roof and half of the front were re-thatched, the exterior re-rendered and the interior re-plastered in October 1993. Complete rethatching was carried out in 1999–2000 by Billy Kilpatrick using flax and retaining existing scraws.

The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/35. Mullylun Road itself is shown on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1857. The house does not appear in the first valuation of circa 1835 but is included in the 1862 valuation, where Peter Curry is listed as tenant at will under the Earl of Erne as lessor, with a modest rateable value of 5 shillings.
