9 Drumderg Road, Gortineddan, Derrylin, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, BT92 9FP

9 Drumderg Road is a single-storey thatched house at Gortineddan, built between 1820 and 1839. The house is approached by a lane running north-easterly from the Ballyconnel/Derrylin road, passing farm buildings about a quarter of a mile distant. Derrylin town lies just over four miles to the north.

The entrance to the property is marked by an elaborate screen comprising wing walls with copings and six large square pillars with cappings, the pair nearest the road being of reduced height. Walling extends either side of the forecourt; the western section is contiguous with the house, incorporating the front wall and a square capless pillar from which a hoop iron gate hangs.

The house faces north and is roughcast and whitened, with a thatched roof finished between cement skews. Two roughcast corbelled chimneystacks without pots rise from the roof, one above the kitchen hearth and the other serving the parlour fireplace. A windbreak porch under an extension of the thatch roof is flanked by windows: one to the left (east) and three to the right (west). The left window and the first two right windows are vertically sliding sashes with the sashes divided into two vertically. The end right window, inset within the doorway of the former dairy, is a 3 over 3 vertically sliding sash. All frames are provided with sash stops and traditional-depth sills at the leading edges. Each gable contains a vertically sliding window at high level, with sashes divided into two vertically. The porch has a sheeted entrance door with sill blocks.

A gabled extension at the rear has similar roughcast and whitewashed finish to the main house. The extension roof is covered with natural slate and fitted with aluminium rainwater goods and a cast iron soil and vent pipe. The extension windows are modelled on those in the remainder of the building, complete with sash stops and deep sills.

The dairy has been incorporated within the house, providing additional accommodation. At the west side of the house adjacent to the former dairy, the spindle of a horse walk remains in position, with other parts preserved in store.

The house appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834–35, though not recorded in the first valuation of circa 1835. It is included in the second valuation of 1862, with Edward and John Donohoe listed as occupants as tenants 'at will' of the Earl of Erne. Both are recorded with the fraction '½' and a rateable value of £1-10-0, suggesting they shared the house.

When surveyed in 1991, the roof was found to be in poor condition. The house was renovated and the roof was replaced in 1994, with roof timbers renewed but traditional construction including scraws retained above. The extension is acceptable in both design and use of materials. The relatively spacious site is enhanced by the entrance screen.
