Rose Cottage, 30 Cloncoohy Road, Carrickaleese, Derrylin, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 9LA

Rose Cottage is a single-storey, five-bay direct entry house constructed in the early 19th century (1820–1839), located at 30 Cloncoohy Road near Derrylin in County Fermanagh. It is built of mud walls with stone gables and plinth, finished with plaster and whitewash. The building is roofed in thatch with skews at the gables and is one of a notable group of surviving thatched buildings in the Derrylin area, each displaying distinctive regional features.

The house faces south-west and sits set back from a narrow lane that runs north from a secondary road connecting to the Derrylin–Ballconnell road, approximately one mile from Ballyconnell. The building stands to the rear of a garden with lawn, hedging, and walls.

The thatch terminates with skews at the gables and is fitted with two corbelled chimneystacks on the roofline: one above the kitchen hearth and the other above the first bedroom in the right-hand section. Two rows of scollops run below the ridge. A timber-sheeted entrance door with foursquare glazing in the upper part is sheltered by a windbreak porch extending from the main roof. Three vertically sliding windows are positioned to the left (south-west) of the porch, and two to the right. The sashes are divided vertically, sash stops are splayed, and sills are of traditional depth. A similar window in the south-east gable lights the bathroom, with a plain timber-framed window with deep sill above it providing light to the now-sealed roofspace. A sealed entrance formerly in the rear bathroom wall retains its exterior timber-sheeted door.

A short flat-roofed passage connects the living room to a kitchen extension. The extension wall finish matches the main house, and the roof has an asymmetrical double pitch. Paired plain-sashed windows on the north-west and north-east sides have splayed sash stops and deep sills. The south-east corner of this extension is splayed.

The building's layout remains unaltered, and care has been taken to retain the style of the roof, the vertically sliding windows, and interior detailing including the fireplace. Originally, the south-east bay was a dairy; it now serves as a bedroom and bathroom.

The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834–35 but is not recorded in the contemporary valuation. It is listed in the second valuation of 1862, with Thomas McKenna as occupant and the representatives of William H. [?]Enry as lessors, with a rateable value of £1–10–0. The house was re-thatched in 1992 by Gerry Agnew using flax, with repairs in 1996 and a further re-thatching in 2001 by Billy Kilpatrick.
