Description

This is a fountain, likely constructed between 1920 and 1939. It is one of a group of well-maintained, similar fountains in Beragh, serving as a reminder of a time when drinking water was only accessible from public locations. The fountain features a plain, shaped, fluted column inscribed with “Glenfield & Kennedy Ld, Kilmarnock”. It has a lion's mouth spout and an acorn finial. The fountain is situated in a prominent roadside location at a road junction. While several pumps are shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1906 and 1937, this specific location is not marked, suggesting the fountain was installed after 1936. Further details are included in the Environment Heritage Service Report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hammond (January 1997, Pump no. 73). The fountain exhibits industrial archaeological interest and possesses architectural merit relating to its style, proportions, ornamentation, setting, and group value.
