Description

This fountain, likely constructed between 1920 and 1939, is one of several well-maintained, similar fountains in Beragh, County Tyrone. These fountains serve as a reminder of a time when public water sources were the primary means of obtaining drinking water.

The fountain features a plain, shaped, fluted column topped with an acorn finial and a lion's mouth spout. The column is inscribed with the name "Glenfield & Kennedy Ld, Kilmarnock." It is situated in a prominent roadside location.

While older Ordnance Survey maps from 1906 and 1937 (held at PRONI, Reference OS 10/6/44/5/1 and 2) show other pumps within the village, this particular location is not marked; therefore, it is believed the fountain was installed after 1936. Further information can be found in Fred Hammond’s 1997 report, ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey,’ under pump number 71.

The fountain is of local interest and demonstrates social, cultural, and economic importance due to its historical function.
