Description

This fountain is one of several well-maintained, similar fountains in Beragh, serving as a reminder of a time when drinking water was primarily sourced from public locations. The fountain features a plain, shaped, fluted column topped with an acorn finial and a lion's mouth spout. The column is inscribed with the name "Glenfield & Kennedy Ld, Kilmarnock." It’s situated in a prominent roadside location.

Old Ordnance Survey maps from 1906 and 1937 (held at PRONI, reference OS 10/6/44/5/1 and 2) indicate the presence of other pumps within the village, but not at this precise location. Based on this evidence, it’s believed this particular fountain was installed after 1936, likely within the period of 1920 to 1939. Further details, including photographs, can be found in the Environment Heritage Service (EHS) report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hammond, published in January 1997, under pump number 74.

The fountain holds industrial archaeological interest and possesses architectural merit due to its style, proportions, and ornamentation. Its setting and group value are also noteworthy. It is of both local and social, cultural, and economic importance. The fountain is owned by the local government.
