Description
This is a single-storey, four-bay hearth lobby thatched cottage with an attic, likely built between 1820 and 1839. It is situated to the northeast of Clonshannagh Townland and set well back from the road, accessed by a long lane in a concealed site. The cottage is aligned roughly east-west.
The exterior features a thatched roof with cement-rendered skews and four brick chimneys; one to each gable, and one positioned between bays three and four. Walls are lime-rendered random rubble. The principal, south-facing elevation includes a projecting entrance porch with a flat roof to the right of the second bay, featuring a modern glazed timber door with sidelights and concrete cills. A 1/1 sliding sash window with horns and painted sill is located to the left of the porch, mirroring a similar window in the first bay. The remaining bays have modern timber casement windows. The left gable is blank. The rear elevation has a window in the left bay, a porch set to the left of centre, and three windows to the right—all 2x3 metal-framed casements without cills. The right gable features a window to attic level.
Internally the cottage appears to have been refurbished, and the thatch requires repair. A building is indicated on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/35, although it was not included in the contemporary valuation records. It was recorded in the second valuation of 1862, showing James Bavis as the occupant, John McClintock as the immediate lessor, and a rateable value of £1-5-0. Historical records suggest local significance.
