Gate Screen, Brookhall, Londonderry, BT48 8JE

The gate screen, dating from approximately 1800 to 1819, forms a pleasing entrance to Brookhall and an associated arboretum, holding both local and broader historical interest due to the notable occupants of Brookhall. The screen comprises four square sandstone pillars; the central pair support decorative cast iron gates and cast iron railings on each side, all set within a low wall. The sandstone pillars are ashlar and feature a cornice coping, with one coping now missing, and a band of fluting beneath. The quadrant walls are built of coursed ashlar sandstone with plain sandstone coping. A pair of ship's anchors, originally from the yacht "Sunbeam" and formerly owned by Lord Brasson, are mounted on each side of the gates. It is believed the screen may have been erected during the occupancy of Henry Barré Beresford, or by George Hill, with the gates and pillars themselves likely dating from George Hill’s time.
