Gate Pillars, Foyle & Londonderry College, Duncreggan Road, Londonderry, BT48 0AA

A pair of neo-classical style sandstone gate pillars, constructed between 1860 and 1879, stand within the grounds of Foyle & Londonderry College on Duncreggan Road, Londonderry. Designed by John Guy Ferguson, they originally served as the entrance to Tillie’s residence. Following the conversion of the house into a school and subsequent road widening on the Northland Road, a new entrance was created further down Duncreggan Road. The original gates and avenue have been removed, leaving the pillars set back from the footwalk. They are rectangular in cross-section, with elongated panels on each face. Each panel features a low plinth with a cyma reversa moulding, a fillet necking with two corbels supporting a wider cornice, and an octagonal block with a chamfered top edge. The pillars are currently damaged, with dislodged bed joints and chipped stones. Contemporary gates now occupy the position of the former gates. These pillars are now used as gates/screens/lodges and are owned by the school. They were delisted on February 1, 2005 and are not considered to be a special example of their type.
