Description

This is a stable courtyard dating from 1760 to 1779, likely contemporary with Boomhall House and possibly designed by Michael Priestly. It is located in the townland of Ballynashallog, to the northwest of the main house and a short distance away. The stable block is now part of a complex owned by Derry District Council and tenanted by a Patrick McCloskey, who uses it for stabling horses and grazing.

The stable block is a two-storey, five-bay wide stone building, partially derelict with a largely collapsed slated roof, symmetrically arranged around a courtyard on four sides. The south façade, which serves as the entrance, features a central segmental arched gateway constructed with long and short ashlar sandstone voissoirs. Flanking the gateway are two vertical window openings on each side, some of which have been built up. Above these openings are circular oculi windows, each measuring approximately 900mm in diameter and set within a moulded architrave. The first floor extends over the gateway.

The courtyard is square, enclosed by two-storey buildings with windows and doors occurring sporadically. There was formerly living accommodation within the block, evidenced by the presence of several stairways. The first floor is constructed of timber, and much of the roof timbers have collapsed. The exterior wall formerly overlooked a wall garden, which no longer exists except for arched gateway access; no other openings are present in this wall. The east wall has a similarly segmented gateway with randomly placed window openings. The exterior walls are built of random rubble schist with sandstone and brick trim.

A walled garden to the west was not shown on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map, but is depicted on a later map from 1856 and may have been constructed by the Blair family. A back avenue once passed by the stable block, and a further walled garden, now unkempt, lies to the rear and north of the stable block.
