Description

This is an early 19th-century farmhouse, located on Ballyhanedin Road, Coolnacolpagh, near Feeny in County Londonderry, that has been significantly altered through renovation work undertaken with a Housing Executive ‘improvement grant’.

The house is a well-proportioned two-storey, three-bay structure that originally presented a Georgian style on its front elevation. It has a two-storey kitchen return, creating an L-shaped plan. The building has undergone extensive renovation, and the only surviving feature indicative of its former character is a fine fanlight above the entrance. The renovations include new timber windows, a new front door, dry-dash rendering, and a slated roof. The kitchen return features one window, and a single-storey pitched extension contains a door.

A barn, constructed of good vernacular stone and two stories high, stands in the rear courtyard. It has three pointed arches and exterior steps leading to the first floor, with a small storage cupboard located behind a door underneath the steps. The barn is whitewashed and slated, with traditional gable and eaves details. The circular gateposts at the front of the house remain unchanged.

A building is marked on the site on an Ordnance Survey map from 1831. The current occupants inherited the house in 1980 and renovated it using a Housing Executive Grant at that time, with the fanlight being the only original window permitted to be retained. A 1970 description noted a two-story house with harled and whitewashed walls, a slated roof, and windows with double-hung sashes and full glazing bars. The entrance was recessed within a semi-circular opening featuring a panelled door and curvilinear glazing in the fanlight, with a rendered gable on the roadside. A one-story gabled wing, three windows wide, extended from the rear.
