Description
69 Drumaghlis Road is a two-storey late Georgian style farmhouse dating from around 1840, located on the west side of Drumaghlis Road, approximately four miles east of Ballynahinch in County Down. The building is of special interest for its style, proportion, and ornamentation, which are simple and elegant and made unusual by the detail of the doorcase. The quality of its interior also contributes to its significance as a good rural farmhouse of the period.
The house has a symmetrical front façade facing roughly east, with a hipped slate roof. At the centre of the ground floor stands a panelled door with Ionic three-quarter columns featuring unusual barley twist detail to the shafts, and a plain semicircular fanlight. To either side of the door are sash windows with Georgian panes in a 6/6 configuration, with three further sash windows of the same type on the first floor. The south façade has been enlarged by a modern flat-roofed extension. On the ground floor of the south side is a French door, with a sash window to its right matching those on the front elevation. The first floor has two windows with modern frames. The north elevation features a large single-storey lean-to with slated roof positioned to the left and centre. The north face of the lean-to contains two windows with modern frames and a partly glazed door, while a plain sash window is positioned on its short west face. To the right on the north façade of the main house section are sash windows on both ground and first floors, matching the front elevation. The rear façade is gabled to the left and flat-roofed to the right, corresponding to the extension; the gabled section is blank whilst the flat-roofed section has one modern window on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The main building is finished in roughcast and largely painted; the extension remains unpainted. There are three rendered chimney stacks with cast iron and PVC rainwater goods. The front garden features unusual geometric wrought iron gates.
Cartographic and valuation evidence suggests an earlier, more modest building, possibly single-storey, occupied the site in the 1830s. The present house appears on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1858 and is likely to date from around 1840 based on its stylistic features. Local tradition attributes its construction to Captain Lightbody, possibly the James Lightbody listed as occupant in the 1863 valuation. The current owner's family acquired the property in 1952. The building has been substantially altered by the addition of a large modern flat-roofed extension to the rear and a lean-to to the side, which detract from its original character, though the core structure and interior retain their historical significance.
