Stone Cross, Carnanbane Road, Carnanbane TD, Dungiven, Co Londonderry

The remains of a medieval stone cross stand beside a ditch on Carnanbane Road, near Banagher old church in County Londonderry. It is likely associated with the nearby monastery. The cross is approximately 1000mm (3ft 3in) high, roughly hewn, and significantly eroded. The cross arms measure 510mm (1ft 8in) across, while the upright is 250mm (10in) wide, with a variable thickness due to erosion, approximately 100mm (4in). A repair joint is visible on the vertical shaft. The cross is situated on top of the ditch and protected by a metal railing with a pedestrian gate.

The site was noted on Ordnance Survey maps of 1830, revised in 1905. Descriptions by John McCloskey in 1821 and in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland (1833-34) describe the cross as “rudely executed”. The cross is part of the Scheduled Monument in State Care relating to Banagher Church, though its original position is uncertain. It functions as a memorial and is under the ownership of Central Government.
