Description

Turmeel Bridge is a neo-classical bridge dating from the second half of the 19th century, likely constructed between 1860 and 1879. It stands in a pleasing landscape just south of Dungiven on the Magheramore Road and replaced an earlier bridge depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. The bridge is a single segmental arch stone structure with an approximate span of 14 metres, featuring large, elongated cut stone voissoirs. The soffit of the arch is faced with well cut large ashlar stonework in stretcher bond.

On the upstream side, the bridge has been widened by approximately 1500mm. The arch springs from a boldly moulded stringcourse defining the top of the supporting wall, which is also faced with large ashlar stonework. The immediate abutments are shaped with a curve upwards to accommodate the line of thrust, and the masonry above is of more irregular coursed sandstone. The parapet wall extends for 35 metres, but unfortunately has been rebuilt using in-situ concrete or concrete blocks, rendered with hogsback coping.

The bridge crosses the river at right angles; however, given the road's near-parallel alignment with the river at this point, the ends of the abutments or skirting walls curve, creating a flattened S-shaped plan for the bridge carriageway. The carriageway is 8 metres wide and has a noticeable hump. The parapet on the upstream side has been partially demolished on the east side. The bridge is situated within relatively flat landscape, although it is picturesque. It represents an example of industrial archaeological interest. It currently serves as a bridge, though it forms a difficult bend on the road and experiences considerable traffic flow.
