Description

37 Park Road, Belfast is an end of terrace three-storey rendered house built circa 1924. It forms part of a terrace of four identical houses lining the north side of Park Road.

The building is rectangular on plan and faces north. The roof is finished in natural slate with roll-moulded terracotta ridge tiles. A redbrick chimneystack rises from the structure, and plastic guttering is fitted to the timber fascia.

The walls are rendered in painted rough-cast. The front elevation is two windows wide and features square-headed window openings with rendered surrounds, masonry sills and timber sash windows with ogee horns. A three-sided canted bay window occupies the ground floor with a replacement uPVC window on a concrete sill. The off-centre front door has an original double-leaf flat-panelled timber construction with a rectangular overlight. Above the door is a three-centred arched concrete canopy supported on concrete brackets. The door opens onto a stone step and concrete paved footpath.

The east side elevation is abutted by the adjoining house. The redbrick rear elevation is abutted by a lower gable-ended two-storey redbrick return. Square-headed window openings with some replacement concrete lintels and masonry sills contain uPVC windows. The west side elevation is gabled and blank, with redbrick walling laid in English garden wall bond.

The house was built in 1924 by McIntyre Brothers, contractors, and first appears on the fifth edition Ordnance Survey map of 1931. The area, bordering the southern edge of Ormeau Park, developed gradually from the late nineteenth century onwards. Park Road was the last of three residential roads—including North Parade and South Parade—to be laid out, connecting the Ormeau and Ravenhill Roads. It was developed following the construction of Cooke Centenary Church in the early 1890s. In 1901 only six houses stood on Park Road; by 1931 it was fully developed. All four original houses built by McIntyre Brothers entered valuation records in 1924, valued at £21 each, except for the current dwelling which featured a motor house to the rear, valued at £23. Three additional houses were subsequently added to the terrace, recorded as 'in progress' in 1924 and entering valuation records in 1925.

The house was initially named 'Rosita'. Its first recorded occupant was J W Fenwick, a manager, who lived there until at least 1948, when his wife Mrs H Fenwick took over. By 1950 the occupant was Miss E J Juste.

Although the house retains its historic detailing and has group value with the remainder of the terrace, it is not considered of sufficient architectural or historic interest to warrant listing.
