Description

Mid-terrace three-storey rendered house, built c.1924 on the south side of Park Road, Belfast. One of four identical houses constructed by McIntyre Brothers contractors, first appearing on the fifth edition Ordnance Survey map of 1931.

The building is rectangular on plan and faces north. The roof is pitched with natural slate and roll-moulded terracotta ridge tiles. Shared redbrick chimneystacks occupy either end, with plastic guttering fixed to timber fascia.

The walling is painted rough-cast rendered finish. The front elevation is two windows wide. Square-headed window openings feature rendered surrounds, masonry sills and replacement single-pane timber sash windows with ogee horns. A three-sided canted bay window dominates the ground floor, containing replacement timber casement windows with original leaded coloured glazed overlights set on a continuous concrete sill.

The off-centre entrance has an original double-leaf flat-panelled timber door with a rectangular overlight, topped by a three-centred arched concrete canopy supported on concrete brackets. The door opens onto a stone-paved step and footpath.

The east side elevation is abutted by the adjoining house No. 45, a two-storey structure, with rough-cast rendered walling rising above the neighbouring roof. The rear elevation is redbrick, three storeys, abutted by a gable-ended two-storey redbrick return. Square-headed window openings with masonry sills contain replacement timber casement windows and French doors. The west side elevation is abutted by adjoining house No. 41.

The house was built as part of the gradual development of this area bordering the southern edge of Ormeau Park. Park Road was the last of three residential roads (North Parade and South Parade also serving to connect Ormeau and Ravenhill Roads) to be developed, laid out following the construction of Cooke Centenary Church in the early 1890s. In 1901, only six houses stood in Park Road; by 1931 the road was fully developed. This terrace of four houses entered valuation records in 1924, valued at £21 each, except No. 37 which commanded £23 due to its motor house to the rear. Three further houses were subsequently added to the terrace, recorded as "in progress" in 1924 and entering valuation records in 1925. Number 43 was initially called "Annavale". The first documented occupant was James Thompson, a commission agent, who resided here until at least 1950.
