Description

An octagonal cast-iron bandstand constructed around 1900, located close to the south entrance of Ormeau Park at Ormeau Road. The structure features decorative cast-iron columns and brackets supporting a timber roof structure and octagonal metal sheet roof with lantern and finial. It stands on a slightly overhanging concrete base with machine-cut red-brick plinth. Decorative mild steel railings and cast-iron squinches complete the design. The bandstand was recently sympathetically restored, though modern metal sheet roof covering and contemporary railings detract somewhat from the original architectural styling.

The bandstand was first shown, captioned, on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1902. It was initially positioned towards the north of the park but was relocated to its present position near the Ormeau Road entrance sometime in the mid-twentieth century. The structure represents a typical Victorian feature of a public park.

Ormeau Park was established following the acquisition by Belfast Corporation in 1869 of the demesne of the former Ormeau House, the residence of the Donegalls. The mansion was demolished and the demesne opened to the public as a "People's Park" on Saturday 15th April 1871, under the terms of the Public Parks Act of 1869, which provided for towns of a certain size to raise funds to establish public parks for the benefit of the working classes. The nearby Botanic Garden at that time was only accessible to those who paid a fee or whose fee was paid by their employers.

Bands of regiments stationed in Belfast began playing in the park on Saturdays, and by 1880 local and military bands were performing regularly, though initially from temporary wooden structures. In 1899 the Belfast Corporation Act permitted the Corporation to contribute up to £250 per annum towards the provision and maintenance of bands for performances in parks. Five bands were selected to play in the city's five parks: Ballymacarrett Brass and Reed, Sirocco Lodge Brass, Willowfield Brass, Belfast City Brass and Belfast Temperance Brass. Performances began in June 1900, with weekly programmes advertised each Monday in the Belfast Evening Telegraph. Field survey indicates that a date of around 1900 is consistent with the bandstand's style and construction.

The bandstand is in good condition and is an important local landmark of significant social interest. It has group value with the original gates and railings at the Ormeau Road entrance.
