Description

Gate Lodge at Port Nelligan

A symmetrical two-bay single-storey gate lodge constructed between 1860 and 1879, situated at the entrance to Portnelligan, a substantial eighteenth-century farmhouse located west of Middletown off the Monaghan Road.

The lodge is simply built using traditional materials but enlivened by architectural detailing. It has a rectangular plan with a hipped natural slate roof featuring a leaded ridge, though the hip covering has been lost and replaced with temporary metal capping and modern hip tiles. The principal chimneystack is formed from central bi-partite lozenge brick stacks supported on a plinth with corbelled capping. The eaves are overhanging timber supported on paired profiled brackets, and there are no rainwater goods.

The walling is limewashed Flemish-bonded brick with a stone base course to the rear. The principal elevation faces east and contains a central door flanked by a window on either side. The door is ledged and sheeted timber, covered to the front with a hardboard panel, set within a painted timber frame on plinth blocks; the remains of a gas lamp are still affixed. The windows are horned timber 1/1 sash windows, bi-partite, with painted masonry cills to the front and no cill to the rear. The side elevations are blank, whilst a single window serves the rear elevation.

The lodge is set slightly back from the public road, positioned at the head of a long mature entrance avenue leading to Portnelligan. It is surrounded by mature beech trees and set within an alcoved entrance composed of curvilinear ashlar sandstone walling with roughly dressed stone coping. Modern steel gates hang on plain piers; originally the piers carried ball finials, now lost.

Cartographic evidence indicates that a gate lodge has occupied this northern site since between 1835 and 1860, when the earlier southern entrance lodge was demolished. The second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1860 depicts a square-shaped lodge with the same ground plan and layout as the current building. The lodge was constructed for the Tenison family, who occupied Portnelligan from circa 1860 to 1898. A possible reconstruction occurred around 1908 during the tenure of Joseph Eaken, suggested by changes in the rateable value of Portnelligan and its associated buildings, though no documentary evidence specifically records such work.

The building retains most of its historic fabric and detailing. It has group value with the listed house at Portnelligan and constitutes an interesting composition in its own right, enhanced by its setting amidst mature trees and curvilinear entrance walls.
