Description
The site, located on the west side of Charlestown Road, approximately one mile north-northwest of Portadown, formerly contained a single-storey vernacular house constructed before 1861. The house was demolished after 1974, and a new dwelling now occupies the site. A building matching the original stood until recent years and is depicted on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1860.
The 1974 survey report described the building as a single-storey cottage set below road level. It had a thatched roof with gable ends, rendered chimneys, and rendered, whitewashed walls. The east-facing front featured six drop-hung sash windows, most without astragals, although one window contained vertical astragals. A projecting porch with a slate shed roof extending under the thatch eaves was situated between the second and third windows. The front door was a flush panel design, and the building’s condition was fair, with a frontage of approximately 58 feet.
Historical records indicate that the house was occupied by John Conlon in 1861, with John Irwin, of nearby Carn House, as the immediate lessor and a rateable value of 15 shillings. Ownership passed to the Bank of Ireland in 1895, from which the Conlon family acquired the freehold in 1907. A James Conlon resided there in 1929, and George Connolly was the occupier during the 1974 survey. The house appears to have been demolished around 1985.
