Description
This is an International style house built in 1938 by the architect Philip Bell, located near the rocky shoreline of Strangford Lough, south of Kircubbin in County Down. The house is a large, roughly ‘L’ shaped design, with parts of two and one storeys. It is characterised by its flat roof with projecting eaves and a variety of window and door openings, now largely filled with PVC windows and doors, including some small porthole windows. The facade is rendered with rough cast. The southern portion of the ‘L’ shape is single-storey and contains the front entrance on the north-facing side. A storey was added to the northern section in 1993, alongside the installation of the PVC windows and doors. The design was reputedly inspired by the bridge section of the ocean liner Queen Mary, and the coastal setting enhances the house's nautical elements. The house was originally built for W.A.B. Illiff and later features a garden to the south and west, and a tarmac driveway to the east.
