Description
A terrace of four gabled houses on the south-east side of Main Street, Carrowdore, dating from the early to mid nineteenth century. The buildings appear on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60 and may be among the eleven two-storey slated houses noted in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of around 1834, though they were probably not all constructed at the same time.
Number 23, at the south-west end of the terrace, is single-fronted. The front north-west facing facade has a PVC door with sidelight to the left, a PVC window to the right, and two similar windows on the first floor, with simple surrounds. The south-west gable is blank. The entire rear is occupied by a full-height flat-roofed extension with PVC windows and door. The facade is finished in roughcast render and the main pitched roof is covered with asbestos-free slates, with a rendered chimney stack to the gable and PVC rainwater goods.
Number 25 is also single-fronted, with a modern glazed door to the left and an enlarged window opening with modern frame to the right, matching window to the first floor. The very large full-height rear extension has a flat roof and modern windows and door, constructed in concrete brick. The front facade is roughcast render with smooth render surrounds to windows. The roof is pitched with asbestos-free slates and a single rendered chimney stack, with PVC rainwater goods.
Number 27 is single-fronted but slightly larger than Numbers 23 and 25. A modern panelled and glazed timber door stands to the left of the front facade, with a modern six-pane timber window to the right and two similar windows on the first floor. The front facade is roughcast render with smooth render surrounds. The full-height flat-roofed rear extension has modern windows and door. The pitched roof is covered with asbestos-free slates to the front and asbestos to the rear, with a single rendered chimney stack and PVC rainwater goods.
Number 29 is double-fronted and considerably larger than the other houses. A modern panelled and glazed timber door with sidelights occupies the centre of the front facade, flanked by a modern timber window to each side and three evenly-spaced windows on the first floor. The north-east gable is blank. The rear roof pitch is longer, sloping to make the rear facade single-storey, with a single-storey flat-roofed extension to the left and a modern window to the right on the main house. The entire facade is roughcast render. The pitched roof is covered with asbestos slates, rendered parapet, and three rendered chimney stacks.
All four houses have been greatly extended at the rear in recent times and now feature modern windows, doors, and interiors throughout. Around the 1970s, Number 23 served as a post office; Number 29 had held this function at an earlier date.
