Description

The remains are of a free-standing chimney stack, likely dating from the early nineteenth century (circa 1820-1839), though it is not shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 or circa 1860. The stack was demolished around 1975 as part of a housing development on Crawfordsburn Road, north of Newtownards. It originally stood approximately 40 feet high in a field alongside the road. The stack was square in plan, with battered walls constructed of Scrabo stone, a corbelled cornice, and a blocking course. It measured approximately 6 feet square at its base. The purpose of the chimney remains unknown, although it may have been associated with a former corn mill complex located on the opposite side of Crawfordsburn Road. The site has industrial archaeological interest.
