Description
Glenvale is a former water-powered corn mill dating from the early 1800s, converted to two dwelling houses around 1940. It stands on Crawfordsburn Road in Newtownards, Co. Down.
The building is a two-storey gabled block constructed principally in rubble stone, with sections of rough cast render on the front facade and part of the west gable of No. 47. The upper left portion of the east gable of No. 47 is built in brick. The pitched roofs are covered in Bangor blue slates with Velux windows to the front of both houses. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout. Two brick chimney stacks rise the full height of the gables at the far left and far right, with two further stacks attached to the gables of No. 49.
The south-facing front facade contains two almost centrally positioned recessed pointed arch doorways marking the division between the two dwellings. The left doorway belongs to No. 47 and has a timber sheeted door; the right belongs to No. 49 and has a glazed door with pointed arch fanlight. These doorways occupy the space where a single large segmental arch door opening once existed, traces of which are visible above the door of No. 49. No. 47 has a modern timber casement-like window with narrow surround to the left of its doorway, with two smaller modern windows to the first floor. No. 49 has similar modern windows arranged to mirror this layout but without surrounds. The front facade of No. 49 is slightly broader than No. 47.
The west double gable of No. 47 has three modern windows to the centre of the first floor and two to the ground floor. The east double gable of No. 49 has a glazed door with slated porch roof to the left on the ground floor and a large PVC conservatory to the right. Between the chimney stacks are four modern windows to the first floor, with a very narrow fixed light attic window high in the east gable. To the rear, No. 47 has two modern windows to the first floor, one modern window to the left on the ground floor, and a modern glazed door to the right. No. 49, with a narrower rear facade, has a modern window to both floors. The mortared joints between the rubble on the front facade of No. 49 are raised.
Historically, the mill complex was originally L-shaped, as shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1834. The building stretched further westwards and linked at right angles to another block to the south-west. The brick-built portion on the west facade of No. 47 reveals that only the upper levels were connected, with a coach arch below providing access to the former yard to the south. The water wheel was presumably positioned at the east gable of the present No. 49. The mill may be the "flour mill belonging to Mrs. O'Neil, situated a short distance from the town" mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of circa 1835. On the revised Ordnance Survey Map of circa 1858-60, the complex appears to be marked as "[?]Glen [?]Burn Mill and Kilns", though the text is unclear. The building immediately to the south-west, also part of the former mill complex (presumably a kiln house), has likewise been converted to living accommodation, with a house of circa 1940-50 attached to its south gable. The linked portions between both mill blocks have since been demolished, though traces of the former connections can still be discerned. The conversion of the entire site to dwelling houses is believed to have occurred around 1940.
