Waterpump, Behind 77 Balfour Street, Newtownards, Co Down

This is a water pump dating from between 1880 and 1899. It is located in an alleyway behind 77 Balfour Street, Newtownards, County Down. The pump is of a cow tail closed head lever design, featuring a plain, unembellished head and a fluted cap. It is in fairly poor condition with degradation to its original setting. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest. It was shown on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map at a scale of 25 inches, alongside six others behind the terrace of houses (reference PRONI REF OS 10/3/6/9/1), but is absent on the 1920 and 1939 Ordnance Survey maps.
