Description

This is a substantial two-story terraced block house dating from approximately 1840 to 1850, built in Scrabo stone and exhibiting a late Georgian appearance. It forms part of a two-and-a-half-story terrace of shops, offices, and flats situated on the west side of William Street, with a return into Corry Street. The terrace is constructed of squared Scrabo sandstone rubble with a main roof of Bangor blue slates and four rendered chimneys.

The front facade has been altered, featuring a modern shop front with a large fixed window, glazed door, and PVC signboard above, the cill of which sits slightly above the original cill course; plain render is located below this. To the left of the shop front is a doorway with a surround similar to others in the terrace but featuring a plain fanlight. The first floor has three sash windows with Georgian panes.

The rear of the building includes a two-story gabled return that is rendered and has PVC windows. A dilapidated, single-story rubble-built shed with a mono-pitched roof is attached to the gable of this return, with a previously open window now blocked. The attic windows and ground floor windows on the rear facade of the main house are also blocked. The first-floor window on the right-hand side now has a PVC frame. The main rear roof is covered in asbestos-free slates with two large Velux windows, and two are also present on the front facade. Cast iron rainwater goods are visible.

A portion of the terrace, specifically numbers 2 to 4 William Street, is shown on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1858 to 1860. The return to Corry Street and number 8 William Street were not built by this date. The shop front to number 4 William Street is a more recent addition.

Historical records, including leases, maps, and valuation surveys from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, document properties in Newtownards from the 17th century onwards. The building exhibits late Georgian style and proportions, although alterations detract from the original appearance. It possesses local historical interest, and contributes to the group value of the terrace.
