Description
This is a double-fronted two-storey dwelling forming part of a terrace of five relatively plain houses of various sizes, constructed probably mainly in the mid-19th century (between 1840 and 1859). The property is situated just south of the middle of the terrace near the north end of Shore Road, just south of the junction with Steel Dickson Avenue. The front elevation faces roughly west.
The front façade is symmetrical with a central timber panel door, double PVC top-hung windows to either side, and three similar windows to the first floor. The façade is finished in banded rustication with a painted chamfered plinth. The roof pitch is slightly steeper than the other properties in the terrace and is covered in fibre cement slates with a cement render parapet to the north. There are brown brick chimneys to both north and south sides, cast iron gutter and downspout.
The property has been substantially altered and modernised in recent times. A large modern two-storey extension has been added to the rear. The house is not of listable quality.
Historical records show the terrace appears substantially on Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map of Portaferry, with buildings on this site in possession of James McKibbin, John Smyth, Patrick Savage and Edward Conway. The valuation returns of around 1835 record five houses on the site: two large two-storey dwellings at the north and south ends and three more modest dwellings in between. The 1861 valuation records seven properties on the terrace, suggesting further subdivision. The Ordnance Survey town plan of 1900 shows much the same arrangement, though No.24 appears to have been a single property and possibly a shop by the early 1900s.
The property lies within a conservation area.
