Description

24 Shore Road is a mid-19th century two storey dwelling forming part of a terrace of five relatively plain houses of various sizes, positioned near the north end of Shore Road just south of the junction with Steel Dickson Avenue. The terrace faces roughly west.

This particular property, located in the middle of the terrace, has been substantially altered in recent times and no longer meets listing criteria. The front elevation features a timber panelled door to the right, a double uPVC window to the left, and two smaller uPVC pivoted windows on the first floor. The façade is finished in plain render with painted simulation of a plinth, and has slim concrete window cills. A large two storey modern extension extends to the rear. The gabled roof is covered with asbestos slates and features a brown brick chimney with two pots to the south. The property has cast iron guttering and downspout.

Historical records indicate the terrace was substantially established by 1799, as shown on Patrick O'Hare's map of Portaferry, with buildings on this site recorded as being in possession of Patrick Savage and Edward Conway. Valuation returns of around 1835 record five houses on the terrace site: two larger two storey dwellings at the north and south ends (held by William McDowell and John McDowell respectively) and three more modest dwellings between them that were exempt from rating. The 1861 valuation shows seven properties, with the site of No. 24 appearing to be a single house divided between two occupants. By 1900, the Ordnance Survey town plan shows an arrangement similar to 1861, with No. 24 recorded as a single property. At some point prior to the 1970s, No. 18 took its present form by incorporating the smaller dwelling to its south.
