28 Shore Road, Portaferry, Co Down, BT22 1JZ

28 Shore Road is the southernmost building in a terrace of five two-storey dwellings of various sizes, located near the north end of Shore Road in Portaferry, just south of the junction with Steel Dickson Avenue. The terrace was probably constructed mainly in the mid 19th century, most likely between 1840 and 1859.

The property has been substantially altered and modernised in recent times and is not of listable quality. It is built on a slight angle and is similar in size to its neighbour at No. 26, though slightly taller. The front elevation, which faces roughly west, features an off-centre PVC door with glazing, one two-pane PVC window to the left of the door and two to the right, all with top-hung upper openers. The first floor has two windows, similar in style but taller than those below. The facade is finished in plain render painted white, with chamfered quoins and plinth. The east gable is blank and rendered. A modern extension has been added to the rear. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slate with cement render parapets, and there are two brown brick chimney stacks with various pots. The guttering and downspout are cast iron.

Historical records indicate that the terrace appears substantially on Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map of Portaferry, with buildings on the site occupied by various owners including James McKibbin, John Smyth, Patrick Savage and Edward Conway. The valuation returns of around 1835 record five houses on the site: a large two-storey dwelling at each end of the terrace and three more modest dwellings in between. The second valuation of 1861 records seven properties, though by the Ordnance Survey town plan of 1900 the arrangement had stabilised to match largely that of 1861. Prior to the 1970s, No. 18 took its present form by incorporating the smaller dwelling to its south.
