31-33 Church Street, Portaferry

A single storey terrace block on the east side of Church Street, north of Portaferry town centre. The building originally comprised two small dwellings of probable pre-1834 construction. The front façade faces west.

The house occupies the south end of the block. The front façade features a plain timber sheeted door to the left with a plain fanlight, and a window with a modern frame to the right. To the left of the doorway is a large garage door, recently inserted. The façade is finished in plain render and painted, with paint used to simulate a plinth. An eaves course, stone cill, cast iron gutter and downspout are present. The surviving front section of the gabled roof is covered with Bangor blue slates. A single brown brick chimney stack with one pot rises from the roof.

To the rear is a large, recent two-storey, flat-roofed extension which covers the rear of the original section's roof. The exposed section of the south gable is finished in plain render.

Historical evidence shows buildings on this site from Patrick O'Hare's 1799 map onwards, though this particular stretch of terrace was not recorded in the 1838 valuation returns. It is possible that the present building dates from before 1834. Around the 1980s, the dwelling to the north side of the block was converted to a garage.

The building sits within a conservation area.
